RESEARCH - Categorising title sequences

Narrative title sequences
  • Titles are integrated into the moving images in some way and begin as the film itself begins.
  • Might be a long establishing shot or series of establishing shots
  • Example: The Shining
Discrete title sequences
  • Titles are integrated into the moving images but audience don't know whats going on - helps set the tone
  • Just gives a little hint on what could happen
  • Example: Seven
Stylised title sequences
  • Highly stylised title sequences- filters, motion, animation, graphics
  • Can be a mixture of the other two to create a combined effect
  • Example: Juno
My favourite title sequence is discrete because it doesn't go straight into the narrative. It builds up and creates tension and mystery among the audience, which makes them want to carry on watching the film. An example of this Skyfall.
